Colorado State University students sweep Recycle Colorado scholarship awards
Students, from all corners of Colorado, competed for just three conference scholarships awarded by Recycle Colorado this year, and the recipients were all from Colorado State University -- an impressive achievement for CSU and its academics. At the virtual Summit for Recycling conference, students will learn about career opportunities in the recycling, materials management and sustainability fields, while connecting with private businesses, local government, nonprofits, and university representatives.
“I am excited for all the energy and enthusiasm that each applicant has for recycling, reuse, and reducing waste to landfills," said Alicia Archibald, consultant at Kessler Consulting, Inc., and board member of Recycle Colorado. This year's scholarship recipients have diverse interests, including diverting food waste, making agriculture more sustainable, reducing waste throughout the supply chain, developing new products from used materials, and educating youth.
“Curiosity, coupled with proactive innovation, is something we want to nurture and support,” emphasized Kristin Kim Haynes, executive director for Recycle Colorado. “We hope these scholarships and one-on-one interaction with mentors make their emergence into the sustainability sector even brighter.”
In addition to the scholarships, recipients were matched with a mentor that sits on Recycle Colorado’s Board of Directors and works within the industry. Mentors this year include David Fridland (Eco-Products), Maddie Keating (NRDC), and Neil Noble (Republic Services).
The scholarship recipients will attend Recycle Colorado’s annual Summit for Recycling, online this year, that brings together waste processors, manufacturers, government agencies, businesses and individuals throughout the U.S. The agenda includes educational sessions, a virtual exhibit hall, and special guest appearances.
