Colorado’s waste diversion goals - Can composting get us there?

We all know that recycling and composting in Colorado has been lagging behind the national average. Our state waste diversion goals are coming up quickly, with the first benchmark in 2021 of 32% for the Front Range and 28% statewide. Increasing organics recycling through composting is critical to reaching our goals.

Composting not only keeps materials out of the landfill but also, when applied to soil, encourages increased plant growth, conserves water, and sequesters carbon. Coloradans can learn more about technologies that further enhance organics waste diversion at Recycle Colorado’s virtual event, August 25 and 26. The session “Organics Recycling: Turning a Natural Resource into the Solution” will explain how the natural process of composting catalyzes multiple benefits to help use resources wisely.

Session speakers:

  • Shawn Bruckman, Vail Honeywagon
  • Monique DiGiorgio, Table to Farm Compost
  • Dan Matsch, Eco-Cycle
  • Clinton Sander, A1 Organics
  • Helen Silver, Silver Sustainability Strategies
  • Vannevar Fussell, Compost Colorado (moderator)

“The session really promotes organics recycling as a key innovation within the waste diversion industry,” said David Fridland, sustainability maven at Eco-Products PBC and board member of Recycle Colorado. “We’ll hear local experts talk about innovations in using compost on soils, in composting infrastructure, and in processing at compost manufacturing sites.” The session will end with small break-out groups to discuss each topic in detail.

Recycle Colorado’s annual Summit for Recycling, online this year, brings together waste processors, manufacturers, government agencies, businesses and individuals from Colorado and surrounding states. The agenda includes educational sessions, a virtual exhibit hall, and special guest appearances with meet-and-greets. Sponsors include the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (‘CDPHE’), MolsonCoors, Swire Coca-Cola, Ball Corporation, Momentum Recycling, Waste-Not Recycling and more. Register for the conference at recyclecolorado.org.
