Mellik GortonMellik Gorton

Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)
Denver

Mellik believes a waste-free Colorado is possible in his lifetime and Recycle Colorado as the vehicle to get there. His time as a leader in the Recycle Colorado policy committee and his current role as the Paint Stewardship and Recycling Specialist for CDPHE, has given him first-hand insight on how collaboration across industry sectors can greatly impact the longevity and success of waste diversion policy and initiatives.

Mellik has also spent a number of years with the City & County of Denver, involving himself in a vast array of projects; including modernizing, developing and maintaining Denver’s waste hauler license program, overseeing solid waste operations, and implementing the outreach campaigns, such as, Skip the Stuff. Having worked jobs at the federal, local and now state level, Mellik understands the inner workings of government, their interactions with the private industry, as well as the relationships among each other.

It is a forefront issue to Mellik, the way in which waste management continues to burden vulnerable communities. In order for Colorado to reach its waste goals, it must centralize these voices to bring circular, safe, equitable and accessible waste solutions to all Coloradans. Aside from being immersed in the world of waste, he can be found writing and playing music, riding his bike around town, and getting to the mountains when time allows.
